The FCT Minister says political realignment is gathering momentum around President Bola Tinubu while declaring that he is focused on defeating the opposition at the 2027 polls.

Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has dismissed suggestions that President Bola Tinubu faces a formidable opposition ahead of the 2027 general election, arguing that Nigeria’s political landscape is undergoing a major realignment.
Wike spoke on Friday, August 21, 2026, in Abuja while addressing journalists during an inspection of ongoing infrastructure projects in the Federal Capital Territory.
The minister said he does not currently recognise any opposition political force capable of presenting a serious challenge to Tinubu, pointing to developments involving politicians from different political platforms.
Wike also declared that his political objective is to ensure that opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, face sustained political pressure as the 2027 contest approaches.
The minister’s comments came against the backdrop of the recent meeting between President Tinubu and Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke following Adeleke’s re-election.
According to Wike, Adeleke’s engagement with Tinubu is an indication that political boundaries are becoming less rigid as politicians from different parties consider new alliances ahead of 2027.
He described the emerging political arrangement as a potential “Rainbow Coalition”, suggesting that politicians from different parties could increasingly rally behind Tinubu’s re-election bid.
Wike said he expected the political movement supporting the President to become broader in the coming weeks, with more political figures potentially joining the alliance.
The minister also dismissed claims by some members of the African Democratic Congress that they played a decisive role in Adeleke’s recent electoral victory, arguing that some political actors were attempting to take credit for an outcome they did not create.
On the question of the opposition, Wike pointed to the internal crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party and argued that the political environment currently lacks a single formidable opposition party capable of mounting a unified challenge to the ruling establishment.
His comments add to the increasingly active political debate surrounding the 2027 presidential election, with parties and politicians already positioning themselves for the contest.
While Wike expressed confidence in Tinubu’s political strength, the opposition landscape continues to evolve, with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi and other political figures involved in different efforts to build an alternative political platform.
The 2027 contest is therefore already taking shape through a combination of alliances, defections, consultations and competing political strategies, with Wike signalling that the Tinubu camp intends to remain aggressive in its mobilisation.
