Four-Day Rescue Mission Ends in Tragedy as Algerian Boy Is Found Dead in Well

A four-day rescue operation in Algeria has ended in tragedy after emergency responders recovered the body of a 10-year-old boy who had been trapped inside a deep well, civil protection authorities said on Saturday.

 

The child, identified by authorities as Ayoub, had fallen into the well in the El Bayadh Province of southwestern Algeria, triggering an extensive rescue effort that attracted widespread attention across the country.

 

Rescue teams faced serious difficulties reaching the boy because of the depth and narrow structure of the well. Reports indicate that the well was approximately 80 metres deep and only about 40 centimetres wide, significantly restricting the movement of rescuers.

 

As the operation continued, emergency workers constructed a parallel shaft in an effort to approach the location where Ayoub was believed to be trapped. They then began working to create a horizontal passage towards the boy’s position.

 

The rescue operation was further complicated by difficult ground conditions, including unstable soil and hard layers that slowed the teams’ progress. Authorities had earlier warned that any collapse could endanger both the trapped child and the rescuers working underground.

 

Despite the sustained efforts by Algeria’s civil protection teams, authorities announced on Saturday evening that Ayoub had been located and recovered dead from the well.

 

The tragedy brought an end to a rescue effort that had kept many Algerians following developments closely as emergency teams worked against time to reach the child.

 

The incident also drew international attention, with images and updates from the rescue operation circulating widely on social media as people followed attempts to bring the boy to safety.

 

Authorities have not indicated in the reports reviewed whether a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fall will follow. The immediate rescue effort, however, concluded with the recovery of Ayoub’s body after four days underground.

 

The death of the 10-year-old has left a tragic conclusion to an operation that began with hopes of bringing him out alive and has renewed attention on the dangers posed by deep, narrow wells in rural communities.
