MINNA, NIGER STATE — A court in Niger State has sentenced Aliyu Bala to 13 years in prison after finding him guilty of sexually assaulting his neighbour’s 10-year-old daughter in Minna.
The court also ordered Bala to pay N250,000 in compensation to the victim and imposed an additional sentence of 20 strokes of the cane, according to reports on the judgment.
Following the court’s decision, authorities reportedly took the convict to the Hakimi Palace in Bosso, where the corporal punishment was publicly administered in the presence of community members.
The Director-General of the Niger State Child Rights Agency, Barrister Ummul-Kalthume Muhammad, described the enforcement as an unprecedented development and reaffirmed the state government’s position against sexual offences involving children.
Muhammad said the action was intended to send a strong warning to individuals who may believe they can abuse children and escape the consequences of the law.
The case has renewed attention on the protection of children and the need for effective enforcement of laws against sexual offences involving minors.
Child protection advocates have consistently called for stronger systems that ensure children are protected from abuse and that perpetrators are brought before the appropriate courts.
