The Federal Government has announced plans to strengthen electricity supply across Nigeria through wider deployment and sustainable management of renewable energy assets.

The initiative is aimed at improving the reliability and availability of electricity while expanding the role of renewable energy in the country’s power sector.

The government said the approach would involve not only increasing renewable energy infrastructure but also ensuring that existing and newly deployed assets are properly managed and maintained over the long term.

The development comes as Nigeria continues to explore alternatives and complementary sources of power to address persistent electricity supply challenges and expand access to energy.

Renewable energy technologies, including solar-powered systems and other decentralised solutions, have increasingly become part of efforts to provide electricity beyond dependence on conventional grid infrastructure.

The Federal Government’s focus on sustainable asset management is particularly significant because the long-term effectiveness of renewable energy projects depends not only on installation but also on proper operation, maintenance and financial sustainability.

The Rural Electrification Agency is also expected to play a role in strengthening the management of renewable energy infrastructure as Nigeria expands investment in solar, mini-grid and other distributed-energy systems. Recent reporting indicates that a Renewable Asset Management Company is being launched as part of this broader effort.

The government expects the expansion and effective management of renewable energy assets to contribute to greater electricity availability while supporting wider economic activity and energy access.

The initiative reflects Nigeria’s continuing effort to diversify its energy mix and develop more sustainable solutions to the country’s electricity needs.
