The FCT Minister said his opposition to Imo Governor Hope Uzodinma’s reported Senate presidency ambition was not personal, amid growing political differences between the two figures.

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared that he will not support Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma in any bid to become President of the Senate after the 2027 general elections.
Wike made the statement on Monday, September 21, 2026, during an appearance on TVC’s Journalists’ Hangout, where he discussed his political differences with Uzodinma and the wider developments surrounding the 2027 elections.
Speaking about the reported Senate presidency ambition, Wike said his position was unequivocal, declaring: “Life or death, I will never support Hope Uzodinma to become the Senate President of Nigeria.” He added that his position was known publicly and said it was not personal.
The FCT Minister also alleged that Uzodinma was working to influence the emergence of senators and members of the House of Representatives who could eventually support his reported ambition to lead the Senate.
Wike further alleged that politicians who lost out in the APC nomination process and subsequently moved to alternative platforms could win legislative seats in 2027 without being obliged to support Uzodinma’s Senate presidency ambition.
The disagreement between the two politicians has intensified amid the controversy surrounding Wike’s Rainbow Coalition and its relationship with the ruling All Progressives Congress. Uzodinma currently chairs the Progressive Governors Forum, while Wike has continued to defend his cross-party political arrangement.
Wike also criticised Uzodinma over what he described as internal political problems within the governor’s political environment, accusing him of creating problems and then resorting to what Wike called blackmail when attempting to resolve them.
The minister questioned Uzodinma’s political trajectory and referred to his emergence as Imo governor, while also arguing that the governor’s second term is approaching its conclusion in January 2028.
Uzodinma has been linked in recent political reports to a possible return to the Senate in 2027 and a subsequent interest in the Senate presidency. TVC reported that the Senate recently amended its standing rules to require at least eight years of continuous Senate service for lawmakers seeking the offices of Senate President or Deputy Senate President.
Wike’s comments add another dimension to the political debate over the composition and leadership of the next National Assembly, as politicians and parties position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The statement remains Wike’s own political position and allegations concerning Uzodinma’s motives or plans should be understood as claims made by the FCT Minister, rather than independently established facts.
