Fourteen years after the deaths of four University of Port Harcourt students in Aluu, Rivers State, their names remain associated with one of Nigeria’s most widely remembered cases of mob violence.

The victims were Chiadika Biringa, Ugonna Obuzor, Lloyd Toku Mike and Tekena Elkanah, who were killed on October 5, 2012, in Omuokiri-Aluu, an area in Rivers State. Contemporary reports said the young men had gone to the community in connection with collecting a debt before the situation escalated.

The four were subsequently accused of theft and attacked by a mob. They were beaten, subjected to severe violence and ultimately killed by being set ablaze. The incident generated nationwide outrage and became known as the Aluu Four killings.

The case also became a prominent example in discussions about jungle justice and the dangers of mob violence in Nigeria. Images and video footage of the attack circulated widely at the time, intensifying public condemnation of the killings.

The years that followed brought criminal proceedings against several people accused of involvement in the killings. In 2017, a Rivers State High Court sentenced three men to death for their roles in the murders.

As October 5, 2026 marks 14 years since the tragedy, remembrance of the four victims continues to draw attention to the need for due process and the dangers of allowing accusations to turn into mob punishment.
