Small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in Nigeria are reportedly losing about ₦10 trillion every year due to employee fraud, according to findings released by the Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise (CPPE).

The report highlights that internal fraud has become one of the leading challenges facing MSMEs, undermining business growth, sustainability, and confidence in local enterprise operations.

CPPE notes that the majority of fraud cases involve cash misappropriation, inventory theft, manipulation of accounting records, and unauthorized use of company resources by employees. These activities often go undetected for long periods due to weak internal controls.

The loss, estimated at ₦10 trillion annually, represents a significant threat to Nigeria’s economic growth, especially since MSMEs contribute substantially to employment and GDP generation across the country.

According to CPPE, inadequate oversight, lack of formal audit procedures, and poor implementation of internal risk management strategies are primary factors enabling employee fraud within small and medium enterprises.

The report further warns that failure to address internal fraud may discourage investment in MSMEs, slow job creation, and erode public trust in the sector. Business owners are urged to adopt stronger compliance measures, including digital monitoring systems and regular audits.

Experts emphasize the importance of corporate governance training for MSME leaders and staff to minimize exposure to internal fraud risks and ensure sustainable operations.

Government and private-sector stakeholders are being called upon to support MSMEs in establishing fraud detection frameworks and promoting awareness about common risk factors within the workforce.

The CPPE report concludes that tackling employee fraud requires a coordinated approach combining technology, accountability, and continuous monitoring, without which MSMEs could continue to experience devastating annual losses.
