The Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has expressed confidence that Nigeria will significantly reduce the incidence of Lassa fever within the next decade. The assurance comes amid ongoing public health efforts to contain outbreaks reported in several states.

Speaking on the national response framework, the NCDC DG stated that a structured long-term strategy is already in place to address recurring outbreaks of the viral hemorrhagic disease. According to the agency, sustained surveillance, early detection, and coordinated response remain central to achieving this objective.

The DG emphasized that reducing Lassa fever cases requires collaboration between federal and state health authorities, healthcare institutions, and local communities. Strengthening laboratory capacity and improving rapid response systems are also key components of the strategy.

Lassa fever, which is endemic in parts of Nigeria, typically sees seasonal spikes, particularly during the dry season. Health officials continue to encourage early reporting of symptoms and improved environmental sanitation to limit transmission.

The NCDC has also intensified public awareness campaigns to educate citizens about preventive measures, including proper food storage, rodent control, and prompt medical attention when symptoms appear.

In addition, investments in research and data collection are expected to enhance understanding of transmission patterns and guide evidence-based interventions over the next ten years.

The DG noted that while outbreaks may not be eliminated immediately, measurable reductions in incidence rates are achievable through sustained commitment and policy continuity.

Public health stakeholders have welcomed the renewed focus on long-term planning, stressing that consistency in implementation will be critical to achieving the projected reduction targets.

Health authorities continue to monitor developments and maintain preparedness measures to prevent widespread transmission.
