The Osun State Government has announced plans to institute legal proceedings against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over the freezing of one of its statutory allocation accounts, describing the action as unlawful and capable of disrupting government activities.
The state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Oluwole Jimi-Bada, disclosed the development on Wednesday, stating that the government would approach the Federal High Court to challenge the decision.
According to Jimi-Bada, the EFCC issued a Post-No-Debit directive to the management of First Bank, where the Osun State Government maintains the affected account, effectively restricting transactions on the account.
He argued that the action could affect the smooth running of government operations, particularly as the state prepares for the August 15 governorship election, which is expected to attract significant national attention.
The Attorney General maintained that the state government considers the freezing of the account to be inconsistent with the law and expressed confidence that the courts would determine the legality of the action.
As of the time of filing this report, the EFCC had not publicly responded to the Osun State Government’s decision to institute legal proceedings over the matter.
The development adds a new legal dimension to events leading up to the governorship election, with political observers expected to monitor both the court proceedings and the electoral process closely.
