Kenyan presidential candidate Patrick Osoi has challenged Nigerian industrialist Aliko Dangote over plans for a proposed petroleum refinery in Kenya, saying local investors should have the opportunity to develop the project.

Osoi made the remarks while addressing supporters at a Lions Movement event, where he argued that Kenyan businesspeople could establish a refinery without depending on the Nigerian billionaire.

“I want to tell Aliko Dangote, please don’t rush to start the Petroleum refinery because, when I am sworn in as President of Kenya next year, you will be heading back to Nigeria,” Osoi said.

The candidate’s comments reflect his position that domestic investors should play a leading role in developing major industrial projects in Kenya.

The proposed refinery is planned for Lamu County, along Kenya’s Indian Ocean coast. The project has been reported as a $16 billion investment designed to process up to 700,000 barrels of crude oil daily.

Osoi’s statement has drawn attention to the debate over local investment, foreign participation and the development of petroleum infrastructure in East Africa.
