The Convener of Arewa Think Tank, Muhammad Alhaji Yakubu, has commended senators supporting Senate President Godswill Obot Akpabio’s return to the leadership of the upper legislative chamber, describing their backing as a vote of confidence in his leadership and a boost for legislative stability.

Yakubu’s position comes amid growing political discussions over the leadership of the 11th National Assembly, which is expected to emerge after Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. The debate has gained attention following public declarations by serving senators expressing support for Akpabio to retain the Senate presidency if they return to the chamber.

The senators’ endorsement was reported on October 15, 2026, during plenary. Senate Chief Whip Tahir Monguno and Senator Cyril Fasuyi were among the lawmakers who voiced support for Akpabio’s continued leadership, with Monguno declaring that there was “no vacancy” in the office for the next assembly, provided the relevant lawmakers secured re-election.

According to the position attributed to Yakubu, the support reflects confidence among lawmakers in Akpabio’s leadership and the importance of continuity in the management of legislative affairs. His assessment places emphasis on the role of cooperation among senators in maintaining stability and enabling the National Assembly to carry out its constitutional responsibilities.

The Senate presidency is a key leadership position within Nigeria’s federal legislature, with responsibilities that include presiding over Senate proceedings and helping coordinate the chamber’s legislative business. However, the leadership of the next Senate will ultimately be determined by the lawmakers who constitute the new assembly after the 2027 elections.

The emerging endorsements therefore signal an early effort to build support around the next Senate leadership, although the final outcome remains dependent on the composition of the incoming chamber and the decisions of its members. Public backing from serving senators does not, by itself, guarantee that Akpabio will retain the position.

Yakubu’s reported commendation adds the voice of Arewa Think Tank to the ongoing discussion about legislative leadership and continuity. The broader debate is likely to continue as political alignments develop ahead of the 2027 elections and preparations for the next National Assembly take shape.
